More than $95,000 has been raised for the Western New York Region of the American Heart Association and $20,000 for AIDS Community Services of Western New York, sponsors said Sunday.

Nearly 650 people attended the 1991 Heart Ball Saturday in the Hyatt Regency Buffalo. At the same time, about 650 people dove into 4,000 donated desserts during the second annual "Cause for Celebration" in the Main Place Mall atrium.

"The ($20,000) could be more," said Ronald R. Silverio, executive director of AIDS Community Services. "We had a silent art auction and, by the end of the evening, all 22 pieces had been bid on. We'll see what they bring."

Most of the money from the Heart Association benefit will help fund cardiovascular research and the association's community education programs. Money raised at the benefit for the agency dealing with acquired immune deficiency syndrome will support its services and programs, Silverio said.
