Paula Troost, 21, who is eight months pregnant, and a female accomplice were arrested and charged with a string of robberies that included the holdup of a motorist, police said Sunday.
The crime spree began Friday evening when Ms. Troost allegedly held up an employee at the Clothes Unlimited store in Shirley, said Suffolk County Police Detective James Dolan.
Ms. Troost, who is pregnant, fled with about $630 in cash, he said. Shortly after midnight, she was picked up by a motorist while hitchhiking in the Moriches area, and was joined by Karen Disher, 23, of Mastic, who helped her rob the motorist at knifepoint of $80 in cash and jewelry, Dolan said, adding both had crack habits.
Saturday afternoon, Ms. Troost held up an employee at the Center Moriches cleaners at knifepoint and took about $1,200 in cash and checks while Ms. Disher waited in the getaway car, Dolan said.
However, employees from the cleaners and an adjoining store caught and held the two until police arrived, Dolan said.
