The Grand Island Curbside Recycling Program will go into effect Wednesday. The town's regular refuse collectors will begin picking up contents of yellow plastic containers provided by the town.
Councilwoman Marion P. Fabiano, project chairwoman, said about 30 percent of the town's homeowners have picked up the containers still available at the Highway Department garage.
Residents for the past two years have been depositing paper, plastic, glass and metals in bins provided at the garage on Whitehaven Road.
The recycleables will continue to be picked up each week along with refuse on collection days, Ms. Fabiano said.
