A pregnant woman, Marilyn Colon, 20, was shot in the head and critically injured Sunday during a drive-by shooting in the Bronx, but doctors were able to deliver her healthy baby girl, police said.
She and Carlos Ventura, 26, of the Bronx were standing near the Bronx Zoo early Sunday when a car pulled up and a gunman opened fire, said Sgt. Grace Ridley, a police spokeswoman. Ventura was fatally shot five times about the body while Ms. Colon, eight months pregnant, was hit in the head. Police knew of no motive for the shooting.
Doctors at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center operated immediately and delivered a 5-pound, 11-ounce girl, said Vicki Ciampa, a hospital spokeswoman. "The baby is doing good," but Ms. Colon remains in critical condition, she said.
