WOMAN INDICTED IN SLAYING OF HER RETARDED DAUGHTER

An Erie County grand jury Thursday indicted a Town of Tonawanda woman on charges that she fatally stabbed her mentally retarded daughter on Oct. 21.

Patricia Kirisits, 59, was charged with one count of second-degree murder and three counts of weapons possession. Police said she repeatedly stabbed her daughter, Julie, 23, and clubbed her with a vacuum cleaner and an umbrella stand in the family's Creekside Drive home.

Mrs. Kirisits, free on $50,000 property bail, was released from the Erie County Holding Center for several weeks of inpatient psychiatric treatment at Bry-Lin Hospital.

Mark J. Mahoney, Mrs. Kirisits' lawyer, declined to discuss her defense. But he said Mrs. Kirisits' "psychological state is going to be relevant at trial."

Law enforcement sources said Mrs. Kirisits, who is receiving outpatient care, had a history of treatment for psychiatric disorders before the fatal attack.
