THREE FIREFIGHTERS INJURED IN TONAWANDA ST. BLAZE

Three firefighters were injured this morning while trying to control a fire that burned through a small house on Tonawanda Street, fire officials said.

Firefighter Milton Mercado of Engine 36 suffered cuts to his hand and was treated at Kenmore Mercy Hospital and released. Two other firefighters, John Manning and Thomas Lang, suffered less serious injuries and stayed on duty.

The fire began at 7:35 a.m. in a 1 1/2 -story house at 683 Tonawanda St. in the Black Rock-Riverside area of the city, officials said. Officials said at least one person was in the house when the fire started, but escaped.

Firefighters had the flames under control about 8 a.m. Damage was estimated at $55,000. Fire investigators were still probing for a cause early this afternoon.
