OLAF FUB SEZ: By the time you figure out how to raise your kids, they're grown up. . . .

ON THIS DAY -- In 1832, John C. Calhoun became the first vice president of the United States to resign. He stepped down because of differences with President Andrew Jackson . . . In 1856, Thomas Woodrow Wilson, who grew up to become the 28th president of the United States, was born in Staunton, Va. . . . In 1869, William Finley Semple of Mount Vernon, Ohio, received a patent for "the combination of rubber with other articles in any proportions adapted to the formation of an acceptable chewing gum" . . . In 1937, composer Maurice Ravel died in Paris. . . .

ENDURING HOAX -- On this day in 1917, a hoax was born when the New York Evening Mail published "A Neglected Anniversary," a facetious essay by H.L. Mencken on the history of bathtubs in America. Mencken, who lived in Baltimore, wrote that Erie County's own Millard Fillmore was the first president to have a bathtub installed in the White House. To Mencken's disbelief, many of his readers regarded his spoof as the truth. . . .

Winter is upon us,

Take out your warm clothes.

Bundle up when you go out

From your head to the tips of your toes.
