BELMONT MURDER SUSPECT FACING JAN. 29 TRIAL

The Belmont man charged with last December's strangling death of an elderly Belfast woman will go on trial Jan. 29, Allegany County District Attorney James Euken said Thursday.

Eugene R. Murphy, 26, is charged with second-degree murder in the Dec. 15, 1989, death of Elizabeth Alsworth in her Back River Road
farmhouse.

Ms. Alsworth's body was discovered after she failed to show up to teach a Sunday school class in Belfast United Methodist Church. She was described as a widow of modest means who lived alone and, despite her age, kept a full schedule, including work as a clerical aide at Belfast
Central School.

State police arrested Murphy, a self-employed woodcutter, six days later. He has been in Allegany County jail since his arrest.

Police said Murphy attempted to rape Ms. Alsworth.
