A man posing as a Muscular Dystrophy Association volunteer has recently duped elderly residents of a Cheektowaga apartment complex and homeowners who live nearby into giving him money, the charity's area director said today.
"He's saying he's collecting for MDA, and he has a canister with the MDA logo, but he's not authorized to collect for MDA," District Director Susan Smith said from the association's Williamsville office.
The victims have been residents of the Garden Village Apartments off French Road and homeowners who live nearby, Ms. Smith said. Police were unable to say how many people have been tricked.
Two residents called the association Friday and two more called today saying they gave money to a young man who claimed he was collecting for muscular dystrophy research, Ms. Smith said.
But the association only collects door-to-door during the Labor Day holiday.
