A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Martin's Catholic Church, 1140 Abbott Road, for Eugene F. McCarthy, 69, retired director of modernization for the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority.
Prayers will be said at 9:15 in the Norman E. Gannon and Sons Funeral Home, 1075 Ridge Road, Lackawanna. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna, will be private.
McCarthy died Monday (Dec. 24, 1990) in Mercy Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Buffalo, McCarthy was raised in the old First Ward. He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help School and graduated from Hutchinson Technical High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
In 1951, McCarthy joined the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority as a heating plant engineer at the Commodore Perry housing project. He was senior housing project engineer and was eventually promoted to chief engineer. He was responsible for maintenance of the housing project.
In the early '70s, when the city began to receive money for modernization, McCarthy was appointed director and ran the multimillion-dollar program from City Hall. He retired in 1978.
McCarthy was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Martin's Church.
Surviving are his wife, Marina M.; a son, James F. of Minneapolis, and three grandchildren.
