St. John Fisher College plans to take over Alfred University's 47-year-old nursing program beginning next year.
The move is a response to years of declining enrollments at the school in Allegany County, Alfred Provost Richard Ott said. With medical technology increasingly concentrated in urban areas, fewer students have been willing to do their nursing education in rural areas, he said.
The move must be approved by the state and the Board of Regents.
Alfred has run a branch nursing program at St. John Fisher since 1977 for registered nurses who want to pursue a liberal arts degree.
