LEAK WILL BE PLUGGED AT LANDFILL

A new fitting to be installed this week should be the permanent fix to the leak that plagued the Chautauqua County Landfill in the Town of Ellery last weekend.

The leak was discovered Saturday by landfill employee Jack Skinner, but it wasn't until Sunday before it was plugged temporarily by Dennis Barmore, a member of the county's Hazardous Materials Team.

"What he did was jump into 3 feet or so of leachate, wearing a wet suit, and clamp a plug into the pond end of a drainage pipe," said Richard Sturges, director of the Department of Public Work's environmental division.
