Multiple charges were filed against a 33-year-old Buffalo man early Sunday after police chased a stolen vehicle that they said nearly rammed several police cruisers.
Jeffrey Watkins of 24 Rounds Ave. was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, unauthorized use of a vehicle and criminal possession of stolen property, all felonies, after the 1978 Oldsmobile he was driving ran out of gas at 251 Winslow Ave.
The chase, which reached speeds in excess of 70 mph through city streets, began when Officer James Pitts spotted the car going south on Goodyear Avenue near Walden Avenue at about 1 a.m. Pitts said the driver of the vehicle refused to pull over after he used his lights and siren. A high-speed chase through the city's East Side began, involving other police units.
The car had been reported stolen from Miller Avenue in the Broadway precinct about midnight. Besides numerous traffic violations, Watkins was also charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and criminal mischief. No injuries were reported.
