The Buffalo Zoo is one of 14 organizations named by first lady Matilda Cuomo to receive the 1990 Eleanor Roosevelt Community Service Award.
The annual honor goes to agencies that work creatively with volunteers to address community needs. The zoo depends on 500 volunteers, who worked a record 50,558 hours in 1989 to support its educational, environmental and recreational services to Western New York, noted Executive Director Minot H. Ortolani.
The Roosevelt awards are sponsored by the governor's Office for Voluntary Service, which tries to foster cooperation between volunteers and the public and private sectors. The wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt was noted for her humanitarian service.
The zoo was the only Western New York organization honored.
