RAPPELLING LEADS TO LOSS OF LIBERTY

A man whose identity was not released Friday practiced rappelling off the Statue of Liberty and was taken into custody when he came down far enough, authorities said.

He used a rappelling rope after climbing about 89 feet up, said Manny Strumpf, a spokesman for the National Park Service. After bouncing 35 feet down from the New Jersey side of the monument, he was taken into custody when he reached the third promenade, Strumpf said.
