whose last day at News 4 Buffalo was Friday -- has some unwanted company as a former Channel 4 employee. Ron Gates, who has worked in at the station for 11 1/2 years in promotion, community relations and programming, was released this week.
In a memo to the staff, WIVB-TV General Manager Gary Nielsen said that two current employees will split Gates' duties. Nielsen wrote that Gates' position was "eliminated due to the current financial situation that broadcasting, and the economy in general, finds itself."
Although others might be angry at being let go during the holiday season, Gates classily said he realizes that stations make their decisions now when the business year is ending.
"The company has been very fair in its arrangements," he said.
Gates has done many things in the community and hopes to land a job here. But he realizes that it is unlikely he'll find a local job in broadcasting.
