A judge Friday refused to grant bail to John Gotti, accused of ordering the murder of his predecessor, Paul Castellano, to take over the Gambino crime family.

U.S. District Judge I. Leo Glasser of Brooklyn decided against bail after a three-hour hearing closed to the public and the press. During the hearing, prosecutors played a set of secretly recorded tapes that, the government maintains, shows Gotti is a threat to the public. The tapes, the government said, supported their argument that Gotti and his two co-defendants should be held without bail.
