UNION ORGANIZING EFFORT DEFEATED AT WAREHOUSE

An effort by the United Auto Workers to organize workers at Peter J. Schmitt Co.'s non-food warehouse, 355 Harlem Road, West Seneca failed Thursday when eligible employees voted 77 to 55 against UAW representation.

It was the second time in as many years that a union organizing effort failed at the warehouse. In 1989, the Teamsters Union, which represents workers at Schmitt's Genesee Street warehouse, failed in an effort to organize Harlem Road workers.

A total of 144 employees were eligible to vote in the election supervised by the Buffalo Regional Office of the National Labor Relations Board.
