SUBWAY FARE INCREASE LOOMS AS TRANSIT BUDGET PASSES

A subway fare increase for next year came a step closer with the approval Thursday of a Transit Authority budget that eliminates the Transit Museum and makes a slew of as-yet-undetermined service cuts.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority also approved the $642.3 million operating budget of the Long Island Rail Road, which will have to cut some service next year although it eliminated a provision to close Penn Station overnight.

"We looked at very tough budgets," Tito Davila, a transit authority spokesman, said about total operating budgets of $5.4 billion for next year.
