FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS ALTERS SCHEDULE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The Festival of Lights has a full schedule of activities on tap this weekend and daily through Jan. 6.

The thousands of holiday lights that decorate downtown Niagara Falls normally are lighted and the displays are open from 5 to 11 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 1 to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the 44-day festival.

The viewing hours will be shortened, however, on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, according to Charles Steiner, chairman of the festival volunteer committee.

The holiday hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve and from 5 to 10 p.m. on Christmas and New Year's Day. Free entertainment is offered at various sites almost every evening during the Festival of Lights, but none is scheduled for Christmas Eve nor Christmas Day.

A similar festival also is under way in Niagara Falls, Ont., just across the Niagara River.

Santa's Magical Midway, which had been listed as a principal attraction opening Tuesday in the Convention and Civic Center, will be missing this year.

The midway, which has brought traditional summer carnival rides, foods and games into the Convention Center during the last couple of winters, will not be part of this year's festival because of scheduling and contract conflicts, according to the sponsors.
