STATE FARM HIKING CAR INSURANCE RATES

Auto insurance premiums for customers of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. will increase by an average of 9.6 percent in January and 6.3 percent in July, the company announced.

The company said the amount it paid out in claims per policy increased by 21.3 percent between 1988 and 1989, while the cost of making claim payments increased by 10.6 percent.

Most of the rate increase will be for personal injury protection coverage and liability coverage.

Prices for collision coverage and comprehensive physical damage coverage will change only slightly, State Farm said.
