Fourteen Ohio congressmen on Wednesday urged federal regulators to scrutinize American Telephone & Telegraph Co.'s $6.1 billion takeover bid for NCR Corp.

The legislators claim the merger could be anti-competitive and result in higher telephone rates. "If the merger does not work, the costs of repaying the $6 billion which AT&T is borrowing is likely to be borne by long-distance telephone consumers," the congressmen said in a letter to the Federal Communications Commission.

Rep. Tony Hall, the Democrat who spearheaded the effort, said the letters are "part of a counterstrike by the delegation to block the takeover, which is strongly opposed by local Ohio government and business leaders."
