Former Buffalo Sabres captain Mike Foligno has a knee injury similar to that which has sidelined Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly, and Foligno may be shelved from one to two months.
Foligno, who was traded to Toronto Monday, suffered the stretched medial collateral ligament in his left knee in his Leafs' debut when checked into the boards by New York Islanders defenseman Craig Ludwig Tuesday night.
Bob Stellick, a Leafs' spokesman, said Foligno told him he hit the boards awkwardly, as if his skates might have gotten caught in a rut in the ice.
"I feel so bad at what's happened," Foligno said. "It's not the way I wanted to start out here. Floyd Smith (Toronto GM) probably is pulling his hair out now with both Wendel (Clark) and I going down in the same game. It's an unfortunate thing, but the thing to do is get back as soon as possible."
