ON THIS DAY -- In 1732, Benjamin Franklin began publishing Poor Richard's Almanac in Philadelphia . . . In 1776, Thomas Paine published his first "American Crisis" essay in which he wrote, "These are the times that try men's souls." . . . In 1777, Gen. George Washington led his army of about 11,000 men to Valley Forge, Pa., to camp for the winter . . . In 1843, Charles Dickens published his classic tale, "A Christmas Carol," in England . . . In 1974, Nelson A. Rockefeller was sworn in as the 41st vice president of the United States. . . .

THE STAMPEDE is the name of an alumni newsletter set for publication in February by students and teachers at Medina High School, according to Frederick E. Snyder, principal of the school.

The newsletter will be published three times a year -- February, June-July and November -- and will feature items on sports, music, agriculture, vocational education, academics, upcoming events and general news as well as updates on what some grads are doing. If you want to get on the mailing list or want to help out, write Sue Holland, Medina High School, 324 Catherine St., Medina, N.Y. 14103. Include maiden name and year of graduation. . . .

NAME'S THE SAME -- John Bray, director of public relations at D'Youville College, told Olaf that the college has no plans to change its name to St. D'Youville even though the D'Youville name received international attention with the recent canonization of Marguerite d'Youville. She is the first person born on Canadian soil to be canonized. D'Youville College is the only college in the United States named for her. . . .

REUNION NOTE -- The Maryvale High School Class of 1961 is planning a weekend-long reunion party for Aug. 23-25.
