The Internal Revenue Service has $300,000 it has no use for and wants to play Santa Claus for about 600 people in Western and Central New York.
"I don't want the money. I want to get it to the people it rightfully belongs to," said Donald Mitgang, Buffalo district director for the IRS.
Mitgang announced Monday that his office is holding refund checks for about 600 people, mostly in the Buffalo area, who cannot be contacted.
The 1989 tax-year refunds were all sent out earlier this year but were returned to the IRS as "undeliverable."
Anyone who thinks he has a refund coming should contact the Buffalo IRS office at 1-800-829-1040, Mitgang said.
"We aren't just talking about small sums of money," Mitgang said.
"We have some checks in the range of $5,000 to $6,000. It's kind of puzzling. It seems to me that any person who takes the time to fill out a tax form is going to make sure he or she gets their refund."
