FIREFIGHTERS SAVE MOTHER FROM BLAZE

Susan Seymour, 20, dropped her 2-month-old daughter 40 feet into the arms of strangers before she collapsed in a burning Brooklyn apartment building Monday.

Bruce and Karen Pane, a brother and sister, were walking past the Park Slope home when they saw flames shooting from a third-floor window toward the smoke-filled fourth floor, where Ms. Seymour stood. They used Karen's coat to catch the baby, Amanda Morales, who escaped serious injury.

As firefighters arrived, Ms. Seymour staggered away from the window and collapsed. Firefighter Chris Gafney climbed a flame-engulfed ladder, crawled through smoke to find her, and brought her out. She was in critical but stable condition with smoke inhalation and second-degree burns over less than 5 percent of her body, said New York Hospital spokesman Jonathan Weil.
