The Buffalo-Niagara Falls economy slowed sharply during September, according to the state's monthly index of business activity.
The local index fell to 132 during September, down from 134 in August but up from 128 last September.
The monthly decline was the second steepest drop among the 12 metropolitan areas included in the study. Only Elmira, which had a three point drop from 140 to 137 during September, had a sharper decline.
Statewide, the index slipped one point to 137, down from 138 during both August and last September -- a sign that the state is slipping into a recession, the state Department of Economic Development said.
