A doctor facing a grand jury investigation into the death of his wife apparently tried to commit suicide along with an assistant at his home in this Rochester suburb, authorities said.

Dr. Maurice Heath, 64, and his office manager, Shirley Davidson, were found unconscious Sunday by his pastor.

The Rev. Gary Walsh of Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church said he went to the house after becoming concerned when Heath was not at a morning service.

Heath and Ms. Davidson were listed in guarded condition in St. Mary's Hospital. Police Capt. Neil Flood said they were believed to have taken drug overdoses.

The medical examiner's office has ruled the Sept. 8 death of Heath's wife, Jean, 66, a homicide.

Heath has described himself as a right-to-die advocate.
