Arms smuggling suspect Cenon Rey Avelino will have to wait until at least Monday to learn his fate in U.S. District Court.
Judge John T. Elfvin sent jurors home for the weekend Friday after their second full day of deliberations in the case of Avelino, 41, of Rexdale, Ont., accused of violating federal trade, weapons and money-laundering laws when he sold two Vietnam War combat jets to undercover agents of the U.S. Customs Service.
The Philippines-born businessman has been in the Erie County Holding Center since his arrest Nov. 6, 1989, when the two jets were recovered at the Peace Bridge. Avelino claims the agents used unfair tactics to prod and dupe him into bringing the planes over the U.S. border.
The jury will resume deliberations Monday morning, Elfvin said.
