Thomas D. Shaw, a new officer in the Lockport Police Department, received the top award for excellence Friday at graduation ceremonies of the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy.
Twenty-seven new police officers from the academy's 22nd graduating class will begin assignments with their various departments in Niagara County on Monday.
Shaw, whose father, Thomas Shaw, is a chief deputy in the Niagara County Sheriff's Department, received the Joseph E. Steblein Award for "outstanding conduct and exemplary performance as a role model for future police officer trainees."
Other awards, presented by Capts. Thomas C. Beatty and James E. Gray, went to Officer Jon P. Schuster for excellence in academic achievement, Officer Theodore S. Weed for firearms proficiency, Officer Carlton L. Cain for proficiency in defensive tactics, and Stephen F. Reed for physical fitness. All are new members of the Niagara Falls Police Department.
