GIRL, 8, JUMPS TO FLEE FIRE IN HOME

An 8-year-old girl escaped Friday from her burning home in Newstead by jumping from a second-story window into the waiting arms of her mother.

Lynda Barber caught her daughter Jeanette, who jumped from a window in an upstairs bedroom to escape the flames and smoke, according Erie County sheriff's deputies. Mrs. Barber's two other children -- Stephanie, 10, and Rachel, 13 -- also escaped unharmed.

The fire, which was reported at 3:23 p.m., caused $75,000 damage to the house at 6838 Cedar St. and $50,000 to the contents. It started in the living room, then spread up an open stairway to the second floor. The fire was believed caused by a floor furnace.
