I am writing in response to a letter entitled, "No One Was Forced To Join the Military."
I take a personal offense at the remarks and attitude toward our servicemen in the Persian Gulf.
The writer is correct: They are doing what they were trained to do -- serve our country. These men and women joined the regular army and the reserve of their own free will, but I believe they are more compassionate than the writer will ever be. They are protecting lives and even ideals, however controversial they may be.
My husband, a 9-year Marine Corps and Vietnam veteran, is now an Army Reservist.
I am also a Navy mother who lost her son, not yet 21, before he had served a year in the Navy. He was proud and so am I.
