A free concert featuring violinist Isaac Stern and several other world-class musicians turned into two free concerts when too many people showed up to fit into the auditorium.
Stern, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violist Jamie Laredo and pianist Emanuel Ax took time out from recording sessions here this week to perform for free.
So many people turned up Tuesday afternoon that scores were left standing in the street when the hall was filled. So the musicians agreed to stage a second performance immediately after the first 45-minute recital.
Stern said they had been recording until 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning and had just finished up a demanding five-city tour.
"We're here to work," Stern said. "We have the same ahead of us today. I don't mean to be rude, but please listen and go quickly."
