The South Towns Aquatic Racers (STAR) will defend its team title this weekend in the New York State Swimming Championships at the University at Buffalo Alumni Arena pool.
STAR handily captured last year's state title and the Gov. Cuomo Cup over runners-up Gotham Aquatic Club (New York) and Long Island AC.
Both strong New York City area teams will return this weekend along with contenders Monroe Community Marauders (Rochester), Syracuse Chargers and West Point Swim Club.
Other strong local teams competing are the Amherst Swim Club (AMSC) and the Elma Aurora Aquatic Club.
Local swimmers who will be seeking individual state titles are Lisa Basil (STAR), state high school champion in the 100 backstroke, Ann Girvin (Elma Aurora), state high school champion in the 100 freestyle, and Josie Cordero, state high school runner-up in the 100 butterfly. Top local men's swimmers are Chris Plumb (STAR), Ian Baines (AMSC) and Josh Davies (Elma Aurora).
The state championships consist of men's and women's events in four age groups -- 10 and under, 11-12, 13-14 and senior.
Competition begins Friday, with preliminaries each day at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
There is no admission charge.
