Fred Leggin managed only three points, but they came in the final 37 seconds Wednesday night to help the University at Buffalo preserve a 60-56 men's basketball victory over Albany State at Alumni Arena.
It was the sixth straight victory for the 7-2 Bulls, something UB last accomplished in the 1972-73 season.
Junior Robbie Middlebrooks, who made 10 of 11 field-goal attempts, led UB with 22 points, including 16 in the second half. But it was two free throws by Leggins with nine seconds left that clinched the victory after Albany State (3-4) had cut the Bulls' lead to 58-56.
UB will attempt to make it seven in a row when Kutztown (Pa.) State invades Alumni Arena at 8 p.m. Friday.
Daemen set a school scoring record in defeating Lock Haven (Pa.), 123-114, as five players hit in double figures. Russell John led with 28 points, Stefan Vanduluitgaarden scored 26, Robert Robinson (15 assists) 20, Alex Nowara (13 rebounds) 18 and Gil Padilla 18 for Daemen (5-8). Tim Greene scored 32 for Lock Haven, which was 18 for 48 from three-point range.
Sean L. Williams, sinking 11 of 13 from the field, scored 30 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and blocked five shots to lead Erie Community College to a 100-83 Penn-York Conference victory over host Jamestown CC. Freshman Shawn Cunningham added 25 points and Kevin McCarley 16 for Erie CC (5-7, 5-4).
HOCKEY: Goals by David Maksymio, Mike Lowe and Damon DeCosty backed Paul Kwiatkowski's 24-save goaltending as Fredonia State blanked St. Bonaventure, 3-0, to improve its ECAC record to 7-5. Andrew Amatia had 40 saves for Bona (1-10-2).
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Trish Ryan scored 23 points and Lynette Bubel 21, leading UB to a 75-60 victory over Albany State, the Royals' sixth win in their last eight starts. . . . Jennifer Wieben (15 points, 7 rebounds), Cat Houston (14-11) and Melissa Mahoney (10-11) combined for 39 points and 29 rebounds as Erie CC defeated Jamestown CC, 60-54, for its first victory after nine defeats.
