An armed man ran from a Jefferson Avenue delicatessen with $1,800 Wednesday night after scuffling with a clerk behind the store counter.
The robbery at Golden Corner Deli, 1715 Jefferson, occurred at 8 p.m. when the thief -- armed with a tire iron -- jumped over the counter and began fighting with a clerk.
"We were scuffling behind the counter, and I saw that he had a gun in his pants," said the clerk, who did not want to be identified. "But when he tried to open the register, I wouldn't let him."
The thief was unable to strike the clerk with the tire iron or use the gun, but he did grab money collected from state lottery ticket sales.
"He ran out and I ran out after him, and he jumped into a gray car," the clerk said.
Witnesses told Cold Spring Station officers three men were waiting for the thief in the car, a gray two-door sedan.
