Kenyon Edwards' bucket broke a 61-61 tie with four minutes to play, giving Grover Cleveland its first lead, and the Presidents went on Wednesday night to defeat Turner/Carroll, 72-69, in the first round of the Al Pastor Memorial Basketball Tournament at Buffalo State College.

St. Francis walloped Burgard, 102-82, in the other first-round game.

Grover, which trailed by six at halftime, came alive in the fourth period when Shawn Ashford scored eight of his 14 points and Kenny Robinson, who led all scorers with 25, cashed four free throws down the stretch to ice the victory.

Kevin Glover scored 19 points and Damone James 16 for T/C.

Nick Smith poured in 28 points, John Dietrick 18, Andy Degnan 16 and Chris Pasternak 15 to power St. Francis past Burgard. Renbane Tidwell tallied 26 and Rodrick Heard 22 for Burgard.

Bob Fitzgibbons poured in 27 points as Nichols School overwhelmed Lockport, 98-57, to move into the semifinal round along with Governor Simcoe (Ont.), LaSalle and Niagara Falls.

Kori Brown and Anthony Habib each added 16 points for Nichols (2-0), which raced to a 29-10 first-quarter lead and coasted. Greg Fluellen's 17 points were high for Lockport (1-1). Nichols will host Simcoe in one of Friday's semifinals. . . . Brent Beamer's 23 points led Simcoe (2-0) to a 69-49 pasting of Kenmore East. Ken Warren scored 21 and Mike O'Bryan 18 for East (1-1). . . . Modie Cox scored 22 and Carlos Bradberry 18 to power LaSalle (2-0) to a 78-55 victory over North Tonawanda. Scottie Rose and Cazzie Bradberry added 11 points each for LaSalle. Mike Prybylski scored 10 for NT (1-1). . . . LaSalle will meet Niagara Falls (2-0) in Friday night's other semifinal. Niagara Falls beat A.N. Myers (Ont.), 71-59.

Kenmore West went on a 21-10 third-quarter tear to defeat Grantham (Ont.), 53-42, in the losers' bracket. Jim Brennan scored 17 for West (1-1). . . . Niagara-Wheatfield (1-1) outclassed Beamsville (Ont.), 69-44, as Travis Kilgour scored 20 for the Falcons. . . . St. Catharines (1-1) blew a 15-point second-half lead, then recovered to trim Tonawanda, 52-47. Ken Wojcieszek and Joe Cassata each had 11 for Tonawanda (0-2).


Timon (3-0) rallied to beat Lancaster, 55-51, as Jeff Muszynski netted 15 points and Steve Kull 14. Chris Cybulski and Mark Davis each scored 12 for Lancaster (2-1). . . . Tim Nowicki scored 28 points and Mark McCabe 18 as Cheektowaga (4-0) rallied to defeat Emerson, 74-64. . . . Jeff Davis scored eight of his 13 points in a 19-8 second-quarter spurt that led Wilson over Alden, 51-36.
