ALLEGRO OIL BARRED FROM OPERATING WELLS

A State Supreme Court Judge has permanently barred Allegro Oil and Gas Inc. of Frewsburg from operating 48 oil and gas wells in Cattaraugus and Allegany counties.

The permanent restraining order issued by Acting Supreme Court Justice Peter R. Sprague of Allegany County prevents Allegro and its president, James R. Lee, from producing oil or gas from the company's 36 wells in the Town of Carrollton in Cattaraugus County, and 12 wells in the Town of Genesee in Allegany County.

The court order backs up a decision by the state Department of Environmental Conservation in May to shut down the wells until Lee posted the $80,000 in bonds required to insure that the wells are plugged and environmental problems are cleaned up.

The ruling also gives DEC officials access to the property so it can be inspected and make sure that Allegro has been complying with the shutdown order. The DEC previously had been denied access to the property.
