DINKINS ORDERS AIDES TO PREPARE FOR LAYOFFS

Faced with a $250 million hole in the current city budget, Mayor David Dinkins told his commissioners Tuesday to outline up to 7,000 "personnel actions" -- at least half expected to be layoffs -- to fill the gap, said mayoral spokesman Leland T. Jones.

First Deputy Mayor Norman Steisel and Budget Director Philip Michael "outlined the steps necessary," and the department heads were told to provide plans to cut budgets by 4 p.m. Thursday, Jones said.
