BREEDING LICENSE PROPOSED FOR PETS

San Mateo County has tentatively approved what is believed to be the first measure in the nation to require owners of dogs and cats to either buy a breeding license or get their pets sterilized.

The ban on unlicensed breeding is intended to reduce the number of unwanted animals put to death.

Under the ordinance, effective in 1992, professionals and amateurs would be required to obtain a license to breed their pets or else spay or neuter them.
