A funeral service for Hugh P. Avery, 75, a retired University of Houston administrator, will be held Wednesday morning in Seabrook, Texas. Burial will be Friday in Lakeside Memorial Park, Hamburg.
A native of Buffalo, Avery died Sunday (Dec. 9, 1990) in El Lago, Texas, where he had lived for 18 years.
He joined the University of Houston at Clear Lake City as director of institutional services in 1973. He later became personnel director.
Avery was president of the national College and University Personnel Association in 1972-73 and was presented its Donald E. Dickerson Award in 1981. He was a founder of the retirees association at the university.
In May, the university created the Hugh P. Avery Award, named in his honor, to be presented to a staff member for distinguished service.
A graduate of Bennett High School, Avery held a bachelor's degree in commerce and business administration from Washington and Lee University.
Survivors include his wife, Cecilia; two sons, H. Randolph of Kalispell, Mont., and Robert E. of Pasadena, Texas; a daughter, Judith L. Mayes of Clear Lake City, Texas; two brothers, Elrod P. Jr. of Williamsville and Erdman of the Town of Tonawanda, and three grandchildren.
