Jim Shiesley hit a three-pointer with 18 seconds left in overtime to give Niagara County Community College the lead and added a free throw to seal the Trailblazers' 109-107 men's basketball victory Sunday over visiting Lakeland (Ohio) CC.
Guard Dennis McCullough scored 40 points for NCCC (6-2), the first 40-point game for the school since Joe Charles netted 41 in 1971-72. Damon Mason, whose free throw with three seconds left in regulation forced overtime, added 21 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. Ben Davis III led Lakeland (3-3) with 33 points.
Sophomore Joseph Williams scored 31 points and had 11 rebounds as Villa Maria (9-2) beat Jefferson CC, 88-77, in the championship of the Jefferson Holiday Classic at Watertown. Villa's Bill Perkins scored 19 points and was named the tournament's most valuable player. . . . MVP Sean McCartney scored 30 points as Alfred University outlasted Albany State in overtime, 73-64, to take the consolation game of the Alfred Lions Charity Classic. Mike Vocley chipped in 19 points for the Saxons (1-8).
HOCKEY: Peter Speranza tallied the winning goal 58 seconds into overtime, giving Canisius a 4-3 victory over Villanova at Dann Memorial Rink. The Griffs overcame a 2-0 deficit after one period as Grant Hanley scored a pair of goals to help forge a 3-3 tie after two. Canisius (4-7) had a 45-22 advantage in shots on goal.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Samantha David had 23 points as Niagara (3-2) rolled at Cornell, 90-72. Stacy Kane added 18 points and Pam Gleason had 15 for the Lady Eagles. . . . Kelly Haskin and Shelly Trail tallied 13 points apiece, but Genesee CC dropped a 55-52 decision to Herkimer CC. . . . Tracy Smith had 18 points and nine rebounds but Alfred (0-7) lost to Binghamton, 57-39.
