AROUND THE STATE FEDERAL RAIDS DISMANTLE JAMAICAN NARCOTICS RING

In overnight raids in New York and Texas, hundreds of federal and local agents dismantled a drug-selling, gun-running, murdering Jamaican narcotics ring that calls itself the Gulleymen Posse, the FBI said Friday.

People in the Brooklyn neighborhood where the posse had its headquarters greeted the raiders as a liberating army, said James M. Fox, head of the FBI New York office, and Anthony M. Voelker, chief of the New York Police Bureau Against Organized Crime.

Fox estimated that the gang took in more than $100 million over the past five years and carried out at least 10 murders on orders of its leader, Eric Vassell, who remained at large.

The raids were conducted at several sites in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, and in Hempstead, Uniondale and Albany, as well as in Dallas.
