The Upstate New York Roundtable on Manufacturing commends Gov. Mario Cuomo's leadership and responsible approach in resolving New York State's budget crisis.
Our coalition of upstate's leading manufacturers has emphasized the need over the last year for government to correct structural imbalances between state spending and revenues. Based on our experience in running our own businesses, it is clear that only reduced spending will reach the heart of the problem.
We also applaud the governor's actions in promoting the mandate relief bills, which we predict will lead to historic changes in the way the state drives local government and school district spending. Placing greater accountability on local municipalities to spend more productively will help to provide long-term solutions to spending problems on all levels of government.
Moreover, the governor's proposed cuts are real and necessary. They should result in tremendous savings in years to come.
Our manufacturing coalition will work diligently to encourage upstate legislators to adopt a plan which meets or exceeds Gov. Cuomo's fiscal goals. We will continue to uphold our pledge of support to put New York State back on the path to fiscal integrity and economic good health.
