CONCERNED ABOUT FDIC PLAN

The government's top auditor says a Treasury Department suggestion for increasing the dwindling insurance fund for bank deposits looks like an accounting gimmick.

Charles A. Bowsher, head of the General Accounting Office, told the House Banking Committee Thursday that requiring banks to buy preferred stock from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. "gives us great concern."
