The first full week of the holiday shopping season has yielded a mixed bag for New York state retailers. According an informal survey conducted by the Retail Council of New York State, some retailers reported strong sales and other report weaker sales.
The trend of heavy browsing persists, said James A. Quaremba, president and chief executive officer of the group. Sales were strongest among retailers with non-seasonal merchandise. "Toy stores, book stores and other specialty shops offered particular good reports, with increases ranging from 5 to 8 percent over this time last year," Quaremba said.
Items that are heating up this season appear to be Nintendo, dolls, the Simpsons merchandise, Civil War books, calenders, video equipment, compact disk players and CDs, sweatshirts, sportswear, cosmetics and jewelry.
