Tonawanda stopped a 29-game losing streak with a 42-32 decision over visiting Starpoint in the season basketball opener for both schools Monday. Coach Jack Herlan won his debut behind senior Mike VanDewater's 17 points. The Warriors held a nine-point lead after the first quarter and their lead was never less than seven the rest of the way.
Junior Kevin Schreader scored 14 for Starpoint.
Senior Steve Kull scored 18 points and sophomore Jeff Muszynski added 16 as Timon scored an 87-40 Msgr. Martin Association victory over O'Hara in the season opener for both schools.
Muszynski also pulled down 13 rebounds for the Tigers, who broke the game open with a 27-10 second-quarter run.
