The boyfriend of prison escapee Lawrencia "Bambi" Bembenek has been freed on $100,000 bond from a Wisconsin jail, but the woman he's accused of helping remains in Canada awaiting extradition.
Dominick Gugliatto, 35, a divorced Milwaukee factory worker, is charged with helping Ms. Bembenek, a former Milwaukee policewoman, escape July 15 from Taycheedah State Prison. She was serving a life sentence for the 1981 murder of her husband's former wife.
They were captured Oct. 17 in Thunder Bay, Ont., where she was working as a waitress under an assumed name. The story of the former model and Playboy club waitress -- how she was convicted of murdering her then-husband's ex-wife and then how she escaped from prison -- drew widespread attention.
A Dec. 17 hearing has been scheduled in Thunder Bay on her attempt to gain refugee status and avoid returning to Wisconsin. He waived extradition and was transferred to Fond du Lac to appear in court Thursday.
