Outside one company in downtown Buffalo, you might find not only the U.S. flag, but the Bisons flag, United Way flag, even the Erie County Fair flag, and we didn't even know there was such a thing. But then what would you expect from a company that uses Mr. Magoo as their corporate spokesman?
John P. Manyon, president of Blue Shield of WNY Inc. at Oak and Genesee streets, explains that the flags are meant to show support for community events. During Bills home games, they fly a specially-made Bills flag, and likewise for the Sabres and Bisons. On St. Patrick's Day, the mayor helps raise the Irish flag. When Billy Graham comes to town, up goes the Christian flag. And so on.
We're waiting to see if they might start flying the Sabres flag at half-mast, depending on how the season goes.
