A problem for people who wear contact lenses, especially the extended-wear kind, has been eye infections spread by microbes that breed on the lenses' surfaces. Solutions in which lenses soak may not kill all microbes without vigilant care by owners.

Now a team of ophthalmologists may be about to solve this problem. Exposing lenses to ultraviolet light is more efficient than chemical solutions in killing the microbes on soft contact lenses, the scientists find.
